Artist's Statement
I'm currently interested in interaction and visual design and after a year online, I work primarily digitally for now. I would love to get the chance to learn and do more with other mediums, and have had periods where I’d immerse myself in smaller hands-on craft mediums such as knitting, needle felting, etc.
The wooden QR codes were for a project I did almost two years ago. I was really stressed and I thought others would be, too, so I wanted to make these cards that people could share to remind them to take a moment to breathe. It was sort of a proposed project I had in mind to interact with the public. The code behind the QR code can be changed so that the image that appears can change when I switch out files, but to me reminding others to breathe and take it easy during the semester is important. I think sometimes we overwork ourselves and in turn, it hurts our mental and physical health. I definitely tire myself out a lot and need to be reminded to breathe a bit. This project was also something new, where I tried to fuse a physical piece with a digital idea. In a sense, it was a proof of concept for myself and what I could do. I hope to expand and evolve the project in the future.
The 2D art mockups were from a class where I chose to create educational material for kids. It also is centered on self-care, which I think really fits with the respiration theme because breathing is such a big part of that. This whole project was aimed toward children and helping them learn about taking care of themselves and showing compassion toward themselves and others so they can carry that with them for a lifetime.
